What is it to be Human? was inspired by recent
advances in biotechnology. I noticed new language and images used
to express ideas in this exciting field. For example, we say that
genes are “turned on” or “turned off,” and
scientists are developing new “tools.” In the painting,
hands are turning the wrenches that are manipulating human features.
The DNA and X chromosome are uncovered, and being examined in different
“frames of reference.” We are living in a time when
parents can choose characteristics they’d like to have in
their child, and society is examining the myriad of repercussions
of those choices. In the twenty first century, we are, indeed, exploring
“What is it to be Human?” What do you think?
